Last summer AMC delivered the long-awaited adaptation of Garth Ennis and the late Steve Dillon’s Vertigo comic book series Preacher. Adapted by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and executive produced by Breaking Bad’s Sam Catlin, the series took a unique approach to translating the graphic nature of the graphic novel to cable television, delivering an increasingly weird and darkly funny take on the material. Working its way through season 1, the series stayed true to many of the main characters, but also felt free to dramatically alter the narrative to better suit the dramatic needs of a television series.
As it turns out, those needs has more to do with establishing the characters of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga), and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) within the context of the small Texas town of Annville than they did being a direct adaptation of Ennis and Dillon’s books. As it turned out, the denizens of Annville had a unique role yet to play in the series’ progression. As the titular preacher and his cohort set out to find God in the series finale, everyone left back in town was wiped out by a massive methane explosion, effectively setting the stage for season 2 by giving them no choice of ever turning back.
With Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy piled into a car and a great adventure just waiting to unfold before them, it was clear that Preacher had been transformed into the epic road trip detailed by the comic book. And a new teaser trailer from AMC suggests that is most definitely the case.
The teaser is short and sweet and whoever put it together did a terrific job. Preacher already established that is a delightfully weird show that’s willing to use humor and graphic violence to tell (and sell) its story. The same is definitely true of the new season, if not more so from the look of things.
Whereas season 1 had to deliver the requisite getting-to-know-you moments for the cast, so they could eventually gel and form a convincing on-screen bond, those days are in the proverbial rear view mirror. Now the core cast is locked in a car trying to drive their way through Texas (which, anyone who’s done it can attest it feels like an eternity) in search of the big guy upstairs who has apparently abandoned his post.
All in all, with Dexys Midnight Runners playing and a whole lot of mayhem set to unfold, Preacher season 2 looks set to be a bigger, more exciting storyline in every way.
