This year is packed with comic book films, remakes, and sequels. One beloved children’s TV show, meanwhile, is getting the big screen treatment with Power Rangers coming out in just a few months. The film will take five young, troubled teens and turn them into the heroes that the world needs. Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) is set to be one of the threats that these heroes face off against, and as they learn about their new morphing suits, they will also discover the famed Zords.
Throughout the minimal marketing that Lionsgate and Saban have released for Power Rangers, an in-action look at the Zords has remained out of sight. Glimpses of the Zords have been shown in a poster and later on in toy form. But now the upcoming Power Rangers VR experience is the source of the best look yet at all five Zords.
Power Rangers NOW provided the new looks at the Zords that came from the Power Rangers Movie: Zords Rising VR experience. The images feature the Red Ranger’s Tyrannosaurus Rex, the Pink Ranger’s Pterodactyl, the Black Ranger’s Mastodon, the Blue Ranger’s Triceratops, and the Yellow Ranger’s Sabertooth Tiger. With the film rapidly approaching, it should be interesting see whether or not the Zords are showcased in full force during the rest of the marketing. The movie has still only released one official trailer, letting posters, toys, conventions, and now the VR experience to try to promote the film. The second (and final?) trailer should be coming in the next few weeks, but there is no guarantee that the Zords will be shown in their full separate forms, let alone coming together to form the Megazord.
The chances of seeing the Zords in subsequent marketing is likely reliant on whether or not the full Power Rangers’ suits themselves are shown. The trailer cut short their transformation to try to preserve that full reveal possibly for the final product. However, excitement has continued to dwindle for the film thanks to the lack of marketing, so revealing the Zords in action may be the next necessary step in regenerating interest in the property.
Lionsgate and Saban have big plans for this property, with reportedly six sequels planned to come. If they hope to achieve those lofty goals, nothing is more important than a successful launch this year. Hopefully, audiences and Power Rangers faithfuls will turn out for the film, should it prove to be worth doing so.
