Next year’s season of Power Rangers may be returning to the world of dinosaurs. Rumor has it that the long-running superhero series will be adapting the dino-centric Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger in 2021, after this year’s second season of Power Rangers Beast Morphers concludes its run.
Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger, or “Knight Dragon Squadron Ryusoulger,” is the 43rd season of Super Sentai, the long-running Japanese series from which Power Rangers takes its concept and battle footage. It features a team of knights who draw on the power of dinosaurs, as well as giant battle machines called Mecha (or “Zords,” as Power Rangers names them), to battle ancient monsters, as well as a mysterious armored warrior named Gaisoulg. The series began its run last year and is likely to air its final episode in the coming months.
According to The Illuminerdi, Power Rangers owner Hasbro is looking at Ryusoulger to serve as the inspiration for its upcoming 2021 season. The article cites the franchise’s past success with the dinosaur theme as a motivation for picking Ryusoulger among the slate of previously-unadapted Sentai seasons and explains that Hasbro passed on the space-themed Uchu Sentai Kyuranger (or “Space Squadron Nine Ranger,” the season fans have been expecting to be chosen) due to the overload of Rangers and concerns that the Yellow Ranger’s protruding visor would pose a safety hazard for kids.
As mentioned before, this wouldn’t be the first time Power Rangers featured dinosaurs as its motif. The very first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers would showcase the Rangers operating prehistoric Zords back in 1993, and the aesthetic would be utilized again in both 2004’s Dino Thunder and 2015’s two-year Dino Charge. In addition, this year’s second season of Beast Morphers will contain a special episode reuniting all three of these dinosaur themed teams, with original Red Ranger Austin St. John reprising his role as Jason.
While the writer breaking the story on The Illuminerdi has made several correct predictions in the past (including St. John’s return), it’s important to keep in mind that Ryusoulger being adapted is just an unconfirmed rumor at this point. Still, while fans may be wary of another dinosaur-based season so soon after Dino Charge, there’s no arguing that the theme is popular with Power Rangers’ target audience of kids. Additionally, the seasons featuring prehistoric creatures tend to be well-regarded, giving one more reason for Hasbro to return to the well for 2021. There will likely be a more official confirmation of next year’s Power Rangers season in the coming months, but in the meantime, fans will be able to tune in to the second season of Power Rangers Beast Morphers when it returns to Nickelodeon some time this year.
