The Power Rangers burst onto the entertainment scene with huge success, gaining popularity with both youth and adults alike. The Power Rangers are powerful but united, standing for justice and righteousness and unity — and doing it in a way that gets viewers excited and wanting more action. The different-colored Power Rangers have been represented by a variety actors and actresses since the characters made their debut. Here are 10 interesting facts about the main characters of the Power Rangers franchise which viewers might not know.
A voice that is going places
Fans might not be aware that the voice of Zordon in the Saban’s Power Rangers movie is none other than Bryan Cranston. Cranston seems to have quite a history with the Power Rangers franchise. He was also the voice of Twin Man in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
What’s more, this Breaking Bad alum was the voice behind the character of Snizzard in the same series. Whether it’s on a kids’ TV series or a critically-acclaimed drama, he sure has mastered the art of playing the villain.
Filmed just once
Fans of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers might not know that David Fielding, who played Zordon, was only filmed once for the movie.
There were no retakes of his scene. The part where he is featured in the movie shows just a recording of his face. Directors simply filmed his face for a couple of hours and subsequently, the filming of him was done. Short and sweet. For the rest of the movie, he was used for voiceovers.
Going the extra mile
Many characters in shows go to great lengths to get into the roles of the characters they portray. To prepare to play Zack for Saban’s Power Rangers, actor Ludi Lin visited his old high school.
He is said to have blended right into the proceedings and might’ve fooled everyone had one of his teachers not shown up to ask him what he was doing at his old school. One has to salute the actor for his dedication to the Power Rangers and to Zack.
Alpha alert!
Bill Hader is not just a comedy genius — he was also the voice behind Alpha in the 2017 Power Rangers movie. What’s more, fans of the show might recognize his voice as being that of BB-8 in the movie The Force Awakens.
The Star Wars film was legendary among science fiction fans. However, despite its popularity, fans of Hader might not have realised that he was the voice behind the robot, since all the character said was things like “Beep” and “Boop.”
YouTube fame
As hard to believe as it is, actress Rebecca Marie Gomez, or “Becky G,” rose to fame in a totally contemporary way — using the YouTube platform to put her talent out there. Her rapping and singing rose quickly in YouTube fame, as did her song writing and lyrics.
This all happened to draw the attention of directors and she was eventually cast as a Power Ranger. Now that’s power.
All for a dream
It’s not every day that big dreams of stardom are fully realized. Still, this did happen for the Cyler family. RJ Cyler always dreamed of being an actor, and his dream was fully supported by his family. They even packed their possessions and moved all the way to California, to help their son to pursue his art. Cyler is the youngest of three children. He never gave up on his dream and eventually managed to convince not only his family to support him, but the directors of Power Rangers.
Trained and prepared
They’re so skilled and talented in their spandex, but it is still hard to imagine that the actors of the 2017 run of Power Rangers did many of their own stunts. That’s right, they trained and prepared their bodies and put on their best show in their Power Rangers spandex. There was of course a little help from body doubles and digital techniques but you have to take your hat off to the cast who pulled off such a convincing performance as heroes. This usually doesn’t happen in movies. The actors from the movie boasted about doing many scary things, like hanging over pretend fire pits. Good thing they wore those helmets!
An audition with a difference
The directors of Power Rangers were accommodating towards those who wanted to be a part of the Saban’s Power Rangers team. Ludi Lin wasn’t able to go to the auditions in Los Angeles. However, directors made a way for him to audition in Singapore, closer to his home town. He did so in a small television studio. Lin was later informed by his manager in Beijing that he had been accepted as a Power Ranger.
A leader with a story
Red Power Ranger Tommy Oliver is arguably one of the best leaders the franchise has ever seen. According to the Power Rangers narrative, he became wise and skilled as a leader through his confrontations with the Red Battlezord. He decided to face the confrontation with courage against this villain rather than abandon ship as many other Red Rangers did. He definitely gets kudos for being one of the most self-sacrificing Power Rangers, and fans might not realize that his leadership skills were so hard-earned.
An advocate with a big heart
Theodore Jay Jarvis, or T.J. as he is known to viewers, is a legend in terms of the Red Rangers. This is because he has the heart to rescue anyone — even those who have done the worst possible things. In the case of Bulk and Skull, he showed true Power Ranger bravado when he entered the scene with the aim of rescuing and redeeming the situation. Sadly, this resulted in his demotion to Blue Ranger but fans should know a demotion in no way tarnished this Ranger’s diehard courage and compassion.
