A popular parody Twitter account for The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda was recently suspended, but has just returned. Baby Yoda is one of the newest additions to the Star Wars universe, and has been one of the most buzzed-about new characters to arise from the franchise in a long time. He’s captured the hearts of viewers and has even been featured in TIME’s People of the Year issue. Baby Yoda has also created a huge demand for new Star Wars toys. In fact, some of the Baby Yoda merchandise won’t be available until well into 2020.
So far, with all the love being sent to the character, it appears that Baby Yoda can do no wrong. Even after the most recent episode of The Mandalorian in which he acted in a manner that could have potentially predicted a heel turn, Baby Yoda remains as popular as ever. He was even parodied on a recent episode of Saturday Night Live, which says a lot about his place in current popular culture and in fans’ hearts. After being modded into video games, added into memes, and included on the shelves of toy stores, it was only a matter of time before The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda got his own Twitter account.
Twitter is full of Baby Yoda-themed accounts, but among the most popular is @BabyYodaBaby. The popular Twitter account, currently with around 92.4 thousand followers, shares cute stills of Baby Yoda with captions written in Yoda-speak. However, earlier this week the account was mysteriously suspended. This sparked a Change.org petition to reinstate the Twitter account, with the description explaining, “@BabyYodaBaby was a parody account banned due to unfair reporting. Many people report the real problems, and Twitter does absolutely nothing. This can change!” There is even a response in the petition’s comments from a user claiming to be the owner of the Baby Yoda Twitter account, thanking the faceless vigilante for their support. It reads, “I have appealed the suspension but have not heard anything from Twitter yet. Please continue to contact Twitter on my behalf. Thank you again for all of your kind words and support!” Whether it was the petition, or Twitter fixing a mistake on their own, the account has since been reinstated.
It’s puzzling as to why this account was reported in the first place. Most parody accounts, by nature, tend to revolve around one or two of the same jokes. They don’t necessarily have to share the most thought-provoking ideas or the funniest jokes, they just have to find the right niche, such as posting memes of Baby Yoda with The Avengers. In this case, writing captions in Yoda-speak and posting pictures of the adorable Baby Yoda seemed to hit the mark for fans of The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda character. Looking through the account’s most recent tweets, all of them seem pretty harmless.
Maybe the account was reported by a Star Wars fan who doesn’t want to see potential spoilers, or possibly even a disgruntled bounty hunter out to get Mando. In this rather divisive year, Twitter has been the battleground for many online conflicts and negativity, and as most people know, much like sand, negativity can be coarse and rough and irritating and gets everywhere. It’s a nice change of pace to see an innocuous Twitter account celebrating something people actually like, especially ahead of the release of The Rise of Skywalker. Regardless, the Baby Yoda Twitter account is back, and just in time for the season finale of The Mandalorian, which airs next Friday, December 27th.
