The new Pokémon Sword & Shield expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game will allow players to utilize powerful Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon in their battles for the first time ever. Added in the latest Pokémon outings on Nintendo Switch, Pokémon Sword & Shield, Dynamax and Gigantamax have introduced new ways to experience battles and even some new forms for new and familiar Pokémon alike.
A phenomenon exclusive to Sword & Shield’s Galar region, Dynamax and Gigantamax forms can be encountered in-game through special Max Raid Battles and bring boosted stats and gargantuan transformations to the field. Limited-time raid events will allow players to encounter these newly added forms, though it is worth noting that these have already been banned from competitive play. New Max Raid Pokémon are being added all the time, meaning that players will always have plenty to keep them busy while they await the release of the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC expansions, which will release later this year.
According to the latest update on the TCG, special Pokémon V and VMAX cards are coming to the latest TCG expansion, bringing the ultra-powerful new forms from the game to card battles everywhere. In addition to the 17 Pokémon V cards and 12 full-art Pokémon V cards in this set, this expansion will feature four VMAX cards, with Pokémon like Snorlax and Lapras, and over 50 new Pokémon found in the Galar region. Combined with 30 new trainer cards, including four full-art Supporter cards like Marnie and Bede, and a brand new Special Energy, the Pokémon TCG will have no shortage of additions to keep longtime players and newcomers hooked.
Along with the newly added Galarian forms found in the video game counterparts, the addition of the Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon to the TCG further exemplifies the success of Sword & Shield despite a wave of backlash from fans leading up to their launch last November. Still, with plenty of representation for new favorites from around Galar, and with the addition of new forms, the Pokémon Sword & Shield expansion is a perfect jumping-on point for new fans. The same can be said for newcomers introduced to Pokémon by the latest video games who are hoping to discover new ways to express their passion for Pokémon.
