The PlayStation brand has lost one of its staunchest supporters, as David Cage reveals Quantic Dream games will be coming to other platforms in the future, outside of individual exclusivity deals that could potentially be on the table.
Quantic Dream is a video game developer that has released five games since 1999. The Quantic Dream games are generally interactive stories that are designed by David Cage, who is the founder and current president of the company. Quantic Dream started producing games exclusively for PlayStation systems, with 2010’s Heavy Rain originally being a PlayStation 3 exclusive. Heavy Rain was followed by Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human, with both of the older titles being ported to the PlayStation 4. Quantic Dream made the decision to port its PlayStation exclusive games to PC earlier this year, which means that Beyond: Two Souls, Detroit: Become Human, and Heavy Rain are now available on the Epic Games Store, making them another developer that has skipped releasing its games on Steam.
Cage has confirmed in an interview with Dual Shockers that Quantic Dream will be releasing their future games on multiple platforms as part of becoming a “boutique publisher” of its own. Cage revealed Quantic Dream had been planning on moving away from PlayStation exclusivity for around two years before the release of Detroit: Become Human and that the company would become an independent publisher of its own. The decision was partly inspired by the changes in the gaming landscape in regards to streaming, which has the potential to offer new avenues for developers to act as their own publishers in the future.
Quantic Dream has previously acted as the publisher for the games that were released on the Epic Games Store and Cage claims the company intends to take an ethical approach with regards to how it deals with developers and how they won’t possess ownership of IPs. Quantic Dream’s shift into publishing has been funded by an investment from NetEase, which also purchased a minority stake in the company earlier this year.
The first two games released by Quantic Dreams had changes forced on them by their publishers, with both The Nomad Soul and Fahrenheit having their names changed to Omikron: The Nomad Soul and Indigo Prophecy in North America. Indigo Prophecy was also censored in regards to its depiction of nudity. Cage had nothing but positive things to say about Quantic Dream’s relationship with Sony and the door seems to be open for future collaborations between the two companies in the future. It was stated by Cage that all Quantic Dream games released in the future would be multi-platform, but exclusivity deals could be worked out with individual companies. The only difference is that they are willing to make partnership deals with companies other than Sony.
