The PlayStation brand has been given an incredible honor, as it has won a Guinness World Record for being the best-selling home console brand of all time, beating out both Microsoft and Nintendo. Sony has been the clear leader during this console generation in terms of sales, to the point where the PlayStation 4 outsold the Nintendo Wii, making it the second best-selling home console of all time.
The list of the best-selling video game consoles of all time is dominated by PlayStation and Nintendo systems, but there is a clear divide in the types of systems that are successful for each company. The PlayStation home consoles dominate the top ten best-selling systems of all time, with the PlayStation 2 being the number one best-seller. The only Nintendo home console in the top ten is the Wii, but there are several Nintendo handheld systems that have rivaled Sony in terms of sales, with the Nintendo DS being the second best-selling system of all time. The Nintendo Switch is the fifteenth best-selling console of all time, but Nintendo believes the Switch will sell over fifty million units next year, which would put it ahead of the Xbox One and Super Nintendo.
The combined sales numbers of the PlayStation brand have resulted in Sony winning a Guinness World Record. The official PlayStation Twitter page has announced that PlayStation has been certified as the best-selling home video game console brand of all time, due to the combined sales of every iteration of the PlayStation home systems.
The PlayStation 4 has dominated this console generation due to a mixture of incredible exclusives and the failings of the competition. The Xbox One had a botched launch, thanks to some questionable decisions by Microsoft regarding the ability to use second-hand games and the fact that the system was $100 more expensive than the PlayStation 4. The Nintendo Wii U also fizzled out due to its slow hardware and inability to capture the attention of the audience in the same way that the Wii had done years earlier.
Sony is gearing up for the launch of the PlayStation 5 in the holiday 2020 season and the hype for the system has been building up, but that doesn’t mean that Microsoft or Nintendo are out for the count just yet. The Nintendo Switch has seen incredible success over the past two years and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon, while Microsoft is buying up studios and preparing for its own regular exclusive titles for the Xbox Scarlett. The PlayStation brand has seen incredible success, but Sony can’t afford to be complacent in the face of another console war.
