We also extend the opportunity to write for us to non-writers, we’ve had interest from business owners, workers, students, and more. We welcome all the opportunity to tell your story.

General pitch guidelines:

Start by introducing yourself and include links to any clips (a.k.a articles you’ve written) that you’d like us to look at. Include a potential headline (to demonstrate the overall angle of the pitch) and word count. Bob Cut ‘The Source’ pieces run around 250 words, ‘Movers & Shakers’ run around 500-800 words, and personal essays can be longer. Payment starts at $65 and increases based on experience and the complexity and/or amount of reporting in the piece. We work with writers on a case by case basis and we appreciate the interest.

Tell us the entire arc of the story. Pitches shouldn’t be teases; they should include the beginning, middle, and end of the piece as you envision it. It’s not enough to say you’d like to “explore an issue.” What do you want to say about that issue, ultimately? Pitches should relate to the SF Bay Area in one way or another.

Explain why you are the best person to write this piece and how your perspective will factor in, especially if you’re pitching a first-person piece. If you plan to include interviews, mention a few potential sources. Check to be sure that we haven’t published anything too similar recently (search your keywords in our search bar on the top left corner.) Do you imagine this piece as part of a column or series? Is there a great Instagram component? Let us know how you see this living online. If your pitch is time sensitive and needs an immediate response, please put “TIMELY” in the subject line. We will otherwise aim to respond to pitches within two weeks, but inboxes can get unwieldy, so please follow up if you haven’t received a response after then.

Please note we do not take submissions for the printed magazine—we will reach out to writers we feel personally fit for a story in our printed magazine.
