Walt Disney Pictures first launched the hugely popular swashbuckling action-adventure series Pirates of the Caribbean in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl. The film starring Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, and Johnny Depp garnered positive reviews from critics and casual moviegoers alike and raked in over $600 million at the box office when all was said and done. Its success led to two more within a trilogy following Bloom and Knightley’s characters - Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, respectively - while a fourth film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides shifted its focus to be solely on Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.
For the upcoming fifth installment in the high seas franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Jack Sparrow will once again be the focus as he searches for a way to defeat his old rival, Armando Salazar (Javier Bardem), who commands a ship of ghost pirates. Bloom will reprise his role as Will Turner and fans got their first glimpse of the latest captain of the Flying Dutchman in the Super Bowl trailer. Now, another trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is on the way.
Trailer Track is reporting the third and fourth Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales trailers have been rated by Alberta Film Ratings both of which clock in at two minutes and 30 seconds. Trailer Track speculates one is a 2D trailer while the other is 3D. Given the timing of the trailer ratings ahead of Disney debuting Beauty and the Beast in mid-March, it’s likely the full trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will arrive before then and be attached to the live-action reimagining when it hits theaters. In a similar case, the first trailer of Disney and Pixar’s upcoming animated feature, Coco, was also recently rated.
In previous trailers for Pirates of the Caribbean 5, fans have gotten an eerie look at Captain Salazar - whose ghost crew evokes the kind of horror that many viewers enjoyed about The Curse of the Black Pearl - as well as a brief glimpse of Bloom’s return as Will Turner. While the initial Dead Men Tell No Tales trailer didn’t include Depp’s Captain Jack, the Super Bowl teaser featured him along with fellow returning character Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). Meanwhile, new characters Will Turner Jr. (Brenton Thwaites) and Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario) have additionally appeared in marketing materials.
It’s unclear what the new trailer will reveal since all we know is that it’s on the way and runs two and a half minutes long. However, given Bloom’s Will Turner was only seen in a brief shot in the Super Bowl trailer, it’s likely he may be given more time in the upcoming trailer. Or, it may reveal even more of the plot of Dead Men Tell No Tales, or the rumored return of Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann. That said, it remains to be seen until the trailer officially debuts - though, with it likely to hit in the next two weeks or so, fans won’t have to wait too long until then.
