[Major SPOILERS for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ahead.]

-

The new Japanese trailer for Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales spoils an unconfirmed character return - that of Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann. It’s strange to think that it’s been 14 years since the first film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise debuted, and this year, the long-running Disney franchise is set to return with its fifth installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. In what is setting up to be one of the most supernatural outings in the franchise, the new film finds Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) back again, as he fights to save his own life against the murderous Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), a pirate-hunter come back to life after Jack sent him to the grave several decades before the events of Curse of the Black Pearl.

Luckily, Jack won’t be alone in his fight against Captain Salazar, with the introductions of Brenton Thwaites’ Henry and Kaya Scodelario’s Carina Smyth, two characters who can help Jack find the Trident of Poseidon, the only object that will save him from Salazar’s wrath. In an unexpected twist too, Thwaites’ Henry has been confirmed to be the son of William Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann, both of whom were last seen at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

It’s already been confirmed that Bloom will be returning as William in Dead Men Tell No Tales, resurfacing for the first time since the character took on the role of Davy Jones in the third installment. However, it had been previously rumored that Knightley might be making a return appearance also, even though there have been no mentions or casting announcements connecting Knightley back to the film. But if Disney wanted to keep Knightley’s return a secret, then fans probably didn’t expect for the surprise to be spoiled in the latest Japanese trailer for Dead Men Tell No Tales. Check it out for yourself in the space above.

Knightley can be spotted in the trailer just a few seconds after the one minute mark, following a similarly brief shot of Bloom’s Will Turner. This news comes just a few months after it was initially rumored that Knightley had shot some material for the film in secret during its production, much to the surprise and excitement of Pirates fans everywhere.

While no details have been confirmed as of yet, the original details surrounding her return had stated that Knightley would be returning in Dead Men Tell No Tales for just one brief cameo appearance during the film’s end credits. Apparently, while it doesn’t amount to much screentime-wise for Knightley, the scene does set it up for Elizabeth to play a much bigger role in the sixth installment of the franchise, should it indeed come into fruition. That will all depend on whether or not Dead Men Tell No Tales is financially successful enough, of course, but considering that the Pirates franchise has managed to live on much longer than anyone might have originally assumed, it’s only likely Disney may consider bringing it back once again. Especially if Dead Men Tell No Tales is as successful thematically as the initial reviews and reactions have pegged it to be.
