Star Wars fans don’t have to worry about not getting content from their favorite franchise for the rest of 2019, as its dominating the final weeks of the year. Star Wars began its run in 1977 with Star Wars: A New Hope, followed by Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, forming what’s collectively known as the “original trilogy”. The franchise continued expanding and a prequel trilogy was released between 1999 and 2005, with the sequel trilogy beginning in 2015 with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Fans all over the world are currently preparing for the final installment in the sequel trilogy and the Skywalker saga with Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, but there’s much more to enjoy in the Star Wars universe than just films. The franchise has been expanding to other media for years now, most notably television and video games. Star Wars jumped to the small screen in the mid-1980s, but its most memorable works are the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, which are considered part of canon. As for video games, the franchise has spawned over a hundred computer and video games, some based on canon material and others on the Expanded Universe.
It’s not that common for a big franchise to dominate different media at the same time, but that’s exactly what’s happening with Star Wars in film, streaming, and video games – and fans are truly enjoying it.
Star Wars Is Dominating The Last Weeks of 2019
Disney+ arrived with a bunch of content available at launch, including the Star Wars series The Mandalorian. The show is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order, and follows lone bounty hunter Dyn Jarren (played by Pedro Pascal) in the outer reaches of the galaxy, very far from the authority of the New Republic. The Mandalorian has been a big success and one of Disney+’s most attractive shows, and has been dominating TV discussion since its release. And it has baby Yoda, which has definitely helped boost the series’ popularity.
A few days after the arrival of The Mandalorian, the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was released. The game is set shortly after the events in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and lets players take control of a young Jedi trainee named Cal Kestis, who is being hunted by the Empire. Jedi Fallen Order has been praised for its plot, characters, and gameplay, although it had some glitches and technical issues. Last but definitely not least is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, releasing in December, which is one of the most anticipated films of the year and will bring closure to four decades of Skywalker history. Star Wars is having one of its biggest years in 2019, and fans won’t have to struggle looking for new content as they have some really good options to choose from in different formats.
